LPS-induced Endotoxic Shock

Acute inflammation induced by injection of LPS into the peritoneal cavity.

LPS Lung Inflammation

Acute Pulmonary Inflammation induced by the intranasal injection of LPS. This is a rapid model where leukocytes (mainly neutrophils) are recruited to the lung within 4 hours of LPS treatment. It is possible to measure and characterize the cellular profile of recruited leukocytes to the lung airways as well as the levels of pro-inflamatory cytokines.

Air Pouch Model of Inflammation

Air pouches can be used as a rapid system for screenin anti-arthritic treatments. The pouch displays several features of the synovium since the mesenchymal cells that line the pouch bear similarities to the synovial layer and following injection of an inflammatory stimulus such as carrageenan, the recruited cells are similar to those present in the inflammed synovium during RA. In addition this system has the added advantage of being an easily accessible site of inflammation and can be sampled on several occasions to deliver a time course of results.

In vitro cell based assays:

Cytokine and cell based assays are quick and provide the ability to interpret and predict many biological properties of potential drug compounds. Cytokines and related molecules have been implicated in inflammatory diseases such as rheumatic disease, multiple sclerosis, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, and autoimmune diseases as well as cancer and infectious diseases. These assays provide the ability to determine a potential compounds affect on cell proliferation, cytokine production and cellular responses.
